Working With Elements

The way we metabolize ideas or concepts is usually done best in a way we feel comfortable doing - when we were all in school and had to study for a test, I'm sure we each had our own method of committing the material to memory. For me, it was writing the information down on paper several times, and I believe this worked best for me because I'm most comfortable with writing - it is my creative talent.

And we also have our own ways of communicating with spirit in a way that both celebrates and internalizes their aspect. Some of us paint, some of us do mask making, some of us cook, some us write, some of us sing, etc.

The reason this method works, I believe, is because the activity puts us into what is called the "flow" - when we are so immersed in the activity that time seems to slow down, our state of mind becomes altered, and we feel both connected and inspired by what we're doing. That is the "fun" of our craft - the joy of writing, painting, sculpting, building websites, crafting, cooking, graphic designing, etc. etc. etc.!
If we apply these methods of utilizing creative flow to working with the elements, the possibility of merging with them and learning their lessons, good and bad, are much greater, because we are doing what feels comfortable to us and brings us into an altered state of awareness,

I'm a writer, so, I write a lot of poetry about the elements.

I'm also into cooking and Kitchen magic: perhaps I'll experiment with "elemental" food: spicy for fire, heavy for earth, light for air, and liquids for water.

Whatever it is you enjoy doing, find a creative way to incorporate element work into your craft.

Because not every method works for every person, it is important to work with your element in a way that is both natural and easy for you. I believe these creative/flow exercises will bring you closer to your chosen element, which is important for a healthy state of balance in both magic and in life.

May the East fling open your windows,
and fill your rooms with air;
~
May the South send you strong sunshine,
and give you the strength to dare;
~
May the West wash rivers into your heart,
and oceans into your soul;
~
May the North share the secrets and gifts of the earth,
to heal and make you whole.

~
